P. SainathPalagummi Sainath, well known journalist and the Rural Affairs editor of The Hindu, delivered the Parisar Annual Lecture on "The Wages of Inequality - farm crisis, food crisis and policy" to a packed audience at the S.M. Joshi hall in Pune on 21st October 2010. Mr. Sainath is a well known for his commitment to journalism that highlights the issues of the poorest people, and his work has brought him many awards such as the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award, 2009 and the Ramon Magsaysay Prize 2007.

Bicycle Awareness Program

As part of the Bicycle Partnership Program funded by I-CE, Parisar carried out a project to spread awareness of bicycling as a mode of urban transport, emphasizing mainly the role of cycling in making a people friendly city, and forwarding the idea of sustainable urban transport as a whole.

The project consisted on awareness campaigns touching various groups of the city, like school children, college students and motorists. For each of these groups a customized 'kit' was prepared revolving around the basic components of a film [Cycling Friendly Cities], a presentation and design material like posters and give aways. Workshop on Public Bicycle Systems: Oct 2010

PBS Workshop MainParisar and Janwani, in collaboration with GTZ and ITDP, conducted a workshop on Public Bicycle Systems - Overview and Planning, on 12th October 2010 at the International Convention Centre, Pune

The aim was to familiarize government officials, media and potential private sector partners about this system, how to plan one successfully [poster pdf] and look at examples from various cities, especially from China [poster pdf].

The City and the Metro: July 2010

Parisar organised a national level round-table “The City and the Metro”, held at Yashada, Pune, on 20th and 21st July 2010. Many cities in India are going in for Metro Rail systems in an attempt to address their transportation problems. Such systems are already in operation in Kolkata and Delhi with other cities in the process of building a metro system. In total, India is expected to invest Rs. 2 lakh crores (40 billion dollars) in Metro rail systems over the next 10 years. Presently a public debate is taking place in the city across a variety of issues about the proposed Metro Rail System being considered for Pune.
