Urban Transport

Vision:

As cities grow and become more prosperous, they are seen as engines of growth for the region. Pool of skilled labour, educational, health and recreational facilities, urban amenities, commerce, industry and network of roads to carry auto vehicles - all act as magnets to attract migration from rural areas. While this can often have a positive impact on the city's capacity, in most cases the traffic condition becomes progressively worse. Growing road congestion, increase in levels of pollution, higher number of road accidents, growing threat to open spaces, green lung areas and an overall reduction in quality of life is often the direct result of growing prosperity of the city that tends to move more and more towards auto vehicle domination. Making the traffic and transportation system more sustainable is the only way to reverse this trend.

Parisar, with traffic experts, other NGOs and concerned citizens has been involved in advocacy initiative under the banner of PTTF (Pune Traffic & Transportation Forum) for a sustainable urban traffic and transportation vision.

Declining quality of public transport resulting in uncontrolled growth of personal vehicles, the ever increasing road congestion, health threatening pollution, traffic accidents and damage to natural and built environment as auto-centric development begins to make more and more demands on city's resources, often at the cost of other amenities like health, education, playgrounds, gardens and cultural facilities; are features common to most growing cities.

There is an urgent need to re-orient transportation policies along sustainable lines where people and not auto vehicles get priority. Improved public transport, facilities for cycling and walking, creation of vehicle-free zones and abundant public spaces, parks and gardens are some of the features of this vision.
