The PMPML Dashboard has been conceptualised to capture various performance parameters of the city's public bus service.
PMPML has been consistently putting out a lot of important performance data like ridership, revenue breakdowns, etc., on a monthly basis. However, this monthly data becomes more valuable after analysis, giving trends and comparative insights on performance.
Ideally, such analysis could help inform decisions by the PMPML management. Apart from this, the dashboard could be useful for organisations working on mobility as well as journalists. Parisar conducted a webinar titled “Analysing Public Transport Data: PMPML Dashboard Demonstration” on Friday, 10 April 2026, bringing together urban transport practitioners and consultants, researchers, and citizens to understand how publicly available transport data can be interpreted and used to improve city bus services.
At the centre of the discussion was this PMPML Dashboard, a publicly accessible platform that compiles monthly data on ridership, revenue, fleet performance, service delivery, and operational indicators. The platform enables data analysis and visualisation by allowing PMPML’s monthly sheets to be uploaded in their original multi-page PDF format, bypassing the need to clean and sift through the sheets or convert them into another format. While PMPML publishes a wealth of data through this dashboard, the webinar focused on how this information can be analysed to generate meaningful insights and support better decision-making.
Key Insights from PMPML Dashboard (2025)
- Stagnant fleet, growing dependence on hired buses
The total fleet size remained largely stagnant, fluctuating between approximately 1,900 and 2,050 buses throughout the year. At the same time, there has been a steady shift away from owned buses, which have reduced significantly, while hired buses have increased and now form a larger share of the fleet. - Limited improvement in service delivery
Around 88% of planned service kilometres were actually operated in 2025, representing only a marginal improvement over the previous year. This indicates persistent gaps between planned and delivered services, affecting network reliability. - Network expansion without fleet growth
The number of routes increased during the year, even as the fleet size remained largely the same. This suggests that services may be getting thinner across routes, potentially reducing frequency and efficiency. - Declining ridership
Ridership saw a noticeable decline over the year, including after fare revisions. PMPML lost approximately 1 lakh trips per month in 2025 compared to the corresponding months in 2024. This indicates a possible mismatch between pricing and service quality, and highlights the risk of losing passengers to other modes. In line with the decreased ridership, the average number of passengers per bus per day has also declined over the last year. - Operational challenges persist
Breakdowns saw a slight increase compared to the previous year, with noticeable spikes in certain months. The monthly percentage of breakdowns increased from 2.58% in 2024 to 2.76% in 2025. At the same time, accident rates showed some reduction overall.
Shweta Vernekar who hosted the webinar emphasised that: “The dashboard is an important tool for many stakeholders like journalists, advocacy groups, citizen groups, researchers and students. Data which can be used for action is the most powerful, and the dashboard allows this for multiple stakeholders at once.”
Mr Ashfak Shaikh, Director and Country Head DOMO India, also spoke at the webinar about the experience of building this dashboard, as well as the opportunities DOMO offers for turning data into decision support systems. “At Domo, our goal is to transform complex data into actionable insights that drive real-world change. By powering the PMPML dashboard, we are enabling transparency and helping stakeholders visualize critical trends in Pune's transport system. We are proud to support Parisar in fostering a data-driven culture that can ultimately lead to more efficient and reliable public services for every citizen.” - Ashfak Shaikh, Director and Country Head, Domo India
The session highlighted the need for institutionalising data analysis within PMPML, improving the usability of the dashboard, and enabling wider public engagement with transport data. Strengthening internal capacity to analyse and act on this data will be critical to improving service quality and rebuilding ridership.
